We all want to engage our audiences, whether we are teaching, conducting training, or leading presentations and meetings. Research shows that incorporating active learning activities that immerse the audience in their learning by thinking, discussing, investigating, and creating significantly enhance participant performance and narrow achievement gaps for underrepresented students. Explore the cognitive science principles behind active learning, then experience them through breakout demonstrations, discussions, and handouts describing active learning strategies law libraries have employed. Gain tools to assess learning objectives, encourage collaboration and buy-in, and retain the attention of learners in your library.

Target Audience:

Instructors and presentation leaders from all types of law library settings (academic, public, and private). Librarians of all experience levels: from those who are well-versed in pedagogical theory to beginner librarians who want to become more comfortable with teaching/presenting and learn about easily adoptable tools that can be used to improve library outreach, meetings, or instruction.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to identify five benefits of active learning activities, including supporting nontraditional and neurodivergent audiences.
Participants will experience and evaluate active learning via live demonstrations of exercises law libraries have implemented to assess learning, engage patrons, and/or solicit feedback.
Participants will be able to recreate activities demonstrated at the Conference using a variety of digital take-home materials prepared by the presenters.
