According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, since 2023 there have been 76 bills introduced to limit or prohibit institutions from having DEI offices or staff, to ban mandatory diversity training, to forbid the use of diversity statements in hiring, or to bar consideration of applicants’ race, sex, ethnicity, or national origin in employment. Several states have enacted legislation along these lines, with varying levels of prohibited activities. Law librarians have been ordered to cease consideration of race in employment decisions. DEI centers at universities have been reorganized and renamed.

How are these bills impacting law libraries? What has changed? And what are library workers doing to keep up the work while staying in compliance with the law?

Program speakers will share stories, impacts, and programmatic adjustments. We will explore how these bills are progressing and what is being done to challenge them. Finally, we will explore ways that law library workers can support each other to keep up with our important professional work of building DEI now and moving forward.

Target Audience:

All library workers interested in how diversity, equity, and inclusion work can continue under restrictive local laws.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to identify how legislation prohibiting DEI initiatives is impacting law libraries and law library workers.
Participants will be able to develop and implement strategies to support impacted libraries and to continue to promote diversity in hiring, to enhance equity in our workplaces, and to ensure inclusivity and belonging for our colleagues.
Participants will be able to identify emerging challenges and alternatives to anti-DEI laws.
