Law firm, government, and academic law libraries all have an interest in expanding and diversifying the pool of legal information professionals. Our profession is shrinking to such an extent that colleagues from all types of law libraries are reporting difficulty in filling positions with qualified candidates. Further, the data show we are significantly lagging in allied professions and student populations in diversification. Panelists will share innovative plans to increase the number of qualified legal information professionals, including individuals from minoritized and marginalized communities, through fellowships, internships, and/or grant opportunities.

Target Audience:

Law library directors, managers, and employees from any type of organization (law firms, governmental organizations, and academic law libraries) who are interested in expanding access to law librarianship.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to identify the data, statistics, and trends that demonstrate the need to both expand and diversify the legal information profession.
Participants will come away with ideas as to how they can participate in expanding access to the legal information profession through examples of creative partnerships between entities such as law libraries, professional associations, student groups, and federal agencies.
Participants will be able to explain to decision-makers in their institutions the benefits of widening the pipeline to the profession, so that their institutions can take action to foster the next generation of legal information professionals.
