C. “Dean” Deane, J.D., M.A., M.L.I.S., is a foreign, comparative and international law librarian with over a decade of experience in the field and is a former Chair of the AALL FCIL-SIS. Deane’s expertise spans across both academic and law firm library environments, with a significant tenure as the FCIL librarian at Vanderbilt Law Library. Currently, they serve as the Foreign, Comparative, and International Law Librarian at the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco.
Deane’s journey began in the lush landscapes of Trinidad, where they grew up surrounded by a tapestry of cultures, languages, and traditions. This vibrant upbringing instilled in them a deep appreciation for diversity and a seamless ability to navigate between dialects and social contexts. Their father’s role in shaping the nation’s economy post-independence left a lasting impression on Deane, fueling their passion for law and international relations.
Inspired by the work of renowned FCIL Librarians Mary Rumsey, Marci Hoffman, and their incredibly supportive mentor, Vincent Moyer, Deane pursued a career in law librarianship, intertwining their academic aspirations with a commitment to teaching, research, and scholarly contribution. Deane is the author of the Globalex Guide on Trinidad and Tobago, Is currently updating the Sources of Online Legal Information for African Countries Guide, and has also updated the Customary International Law Guide on Globalex.
Deane is a frequent presenter and has spoken on the topics of User Experience Design on Research Guides, FCIL research and DEIA issues at a variety of events and conferences hosted by, WESTPAC, CALI, NOCALL, SLA-SD, AALL and the Vanderbilt Chapter of the NAACP, as well as the Allied Media Conference.
Dean’s professional achievements include serving as the Chair of the FCIL-SIS. They are the incoming Vice Chair of the BLL-SIS.
